The thought of being in the middle of nowhere without the likes of Facebook, Twitter and mobile phones scares some people but for me that is the idea of heaven. If I was at home I have to admit I would be pretty lost without my technology, but I would happily sacrifice the technology to go on wildlife safari. If you say to someone that you are going on a holiday to Africa there is a very high chance that whoever you are telling will assume that it is a safari that you are going on.
A Kenyan safari is often a great choice for a holiday and that is where I am planning on going next year. I’m a keen photographer and a safari has always been right up there on my list of things to do along with storm chasing and photographing erupting volcanoes. I am already excited about seeing the Masai Mara and all that it has to offer first hand, so much so that my partner is getting sick of hearing about it…
So what is it about a safari that appeals to me? Well for one it is the chance to see and photograph the legendary wildlife. The big cats are high on my list along with elephant, zebra and giraffe. I would also really love to see the vast herds of wildebeest during the great migration. I may end up as meals on wheels for the local mosquitoes but I think it will be a worthy sacrifice to have this amazing experience. I also have to confess that I am a bit of a sucker for the romanticism of the African plains. If I had of one the last huge Euro millions jackpot I would have happily started my new life as a nature photographer, traversing the world to witness and capture images of its wonders! I don’t think my partner would be as keen though, although I’m pretty sure that she would enjoy the peace and quiet!
I am planning on taking my partner on a balloon ride while we are there so that we can see the Masai Mara and the expanse of the Rift Valley stretch out as far as the eye can see. The silence as we glide above the terrain while watching the wildlife below will I am hoping will be one of the most magical moments of my life, shared with one of the most important people in my life.
Have you ever thought about going on a safari holiday? Have you been on one? If so what tips do you have? I’d love to hear from you all!
